Treatments of Campbell de Morgan spots
As Campbell de Morgan spots are collections of blood vessels there are several options for removing them.
Surgery
Firstly, surgery is not an option. To cut these out would leave a scar and also encourage blood vessels to grow back again. So whilst it would seem sensible to cut a blemish like this out of the skin, it is not a good way of treating Campbell de Morgan spots and not recommended.
Laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
Laser or IPL can be used. The light energy from the laser or IPL is absorbed by the red pigment in the spot which gets very hot, destroying the blood vessels within it.
Although laser and IPL are effective, they are quite expensive compared with other alternatives.
At Absolute Aesthetics we are able to perform IPL treatment for Campbell de Morgan spots. However, we recommend electro micro surgery.
Electro Micro Surgery (formerly known as Advanced Electrolysis)
Electro micro surgery for Campbell de Morgan spots is one of the best ways of treating them.
Using electrolysis, a skilled Electrologist uses a probe to cauterise the Campbell de Morgan spot without damaging any of the surrounding tissue. The cauterisation process destroys the blood vessels that make up the Campbell de Morgan spot leaving the body to absorb the scar tissue over four to six weeks.
There is virtually no pain associated with this, particularly if a topical anaesthetic such as an anaesthetic cream is applied to the area before treatment begins. There is rarely a need for a second procedure as a Campbell de Morgan spot is usually destroyed at the first go.
It usually takes about 15 minutes to destroy each Campbell de Morgan spot using electro micro surgery.
